Market Update

April was marked by volatility in financial markets due to President Trump’s tariff announcements on 2 April, which he termed Liberation Day. The MSCI ACWI index rose by 1.0% over the month, but this masked significant fluctuations. The index plummeted over 11% in four days following the tariff news, recovering only after a 90-day US tariff pause was announced. Emerging markets outperformed developed ones, benefiting from the weaker dollar. Gold prices soared to a record USD 3,500 per ounce, driven by its safe-haven appeal amid tariff uncertainties.

Investor sentiment rebounded in May, with the MSCI All Countries World Index rising by 5.8% in US dollar terms, bringing year-to-date performance back into positive territory. US government bond yields increased, with the 10-year yield nearing 4.50%, while the US dollar remained stable. Trade agreements between the Trump administration and the UK and China temporarily eased reciprocal tariffs, boosting global stock markets. However, tariff-related uncertainties persisted, including Trump’s threats of 50% duties on EU imports and subsequent legal challenges to his tariff regime. Moody’s downgraded the US sovereign rating due to rising public debt and potential institutional weakening.

Global equity markets rallied in June, with the MSCI All Countries World Index gaining 4.5%. Despite escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, which included US bombing of Iranian nuclear sites, a subsequent truce bolstered investor confidence, particularly in US and emerging markets. European markets lagged due to rising oil prices and currency appreciations against the US dollar and Asian currencies. The US stock market benefited from progress on Trump’s fiscal plan, offering tax cuts and increased spending on defence and border protection, albeit at the expense of higher public debt. Bond market yields fell amid slowing inflation and GDP growth, reinforcing expectations of further Federal Reserve interest rate cuts before year-end.

The second quarter was tumultuous but asset performance remained strong. The S&P 500 saw a significant decline after reciprocal US tariffs were announced but rebounded to end the quarter at a new record. The global economy remained resilient with minimal tariff impact on inflation. Geopolitical tensions included oil price volatility due to Israel's attacks on Iran, followed by a ceasefire. US fiscal concerns led to higher Treasury yields, while the US dollar experienced its worst first half performance since 1973.

Fund Performance & Positioning

During the second quarter the Fund returned +13.7% (vs +2.3% for the benchmark). During this period, the S&P 500 rose by +10.6% and the MSCI All Country World by +11.5%. In Europe the DJ Eurostoxx delivered +1.1% for the quarter, whilst in Asia the Hang Seng produced a return of +4.1%, all in local currency terms.

Asset Allocation (Alpha 1.34%)
During Q2, our asset allocation provided strong returns. This was primarily driven by our equity overweight relative to the reference benchmark and against fixed income. We remained committed to our sector and regional allocation favouring technology, consumer discretionary and communication services. Having zero exposure to commodities benefitted, whilst we saw a small detraction from alternatives and property.

Security Selection (Alpha 5.57%)
Despite the heightened volatility and cross asset correlation our security selection was extremely strong for the quarter. Here our allocation to the long duration growth sectors powered ahead following April’s sharp drawdown. In addition, we saw financials and industrials all move higher, whilst our short duration bond exposure worked well. With the property allocation key holdings added value as beneficiaries of lower rates.

The Fund’s asset allocation remained skewed towards equities over fixed income during the quarter. An opportunity to trim certain equity positions, locking-in profits and managing risk, was taken after a strong May-June period. The Fund reduced exposure to the US Treasury curve and maintained high-quality bonds. In real estate, an allocation to REITS and infrastructure was built-out, due to their sensitivity to lower interest rates. The allocations to commodities and hedge funds remained unchanged.

The second quarter provided strong returns across the Fund, bouncing back strongly following the end of Q1. Following the turmoil at the beginning of April in relation to Liberation Day, our long duration stocks and growth focus led the gains. Here we saw the month of April produce a positive return of 1.6%, followed by May +6.7% and June +5.0%, comfortably above our reference benchmark.

Driving these returns was primarily our asset allocation, favouring equity over bonds. With our equity exposure, overweight allocations to US, Europe and Asia helped and we also saw our UK names perform well. Despite the heightened level of uncertainty, we had seen a strong rebound across our equity holdings during the Q2. Growth stocks have outperformed Value since the April lows and we continue to see upside for our holdings, even with high valuations during Q1/Q2, the consensus indicates continued robust earnings growth for the portfolio’s holdings. This combined with high quality fixed income with a lower than benchmark duration added value. Our REITs/property allocation moved along, and we have added at the margin believing lower rates will benefit the sector.

Our portfolio has an overweight to the consumer discretionary sector on a global basis. Our focus has been on the luxury consumer companies in Europe, such as Hermes and Ferrari, and disruptive and innovative companies in the US, such as Airbnb and ON. Within the information technology sector, we have an allocation across companies which we believe are likely beneficiaries from artificial intelligence.

Within fixed income over the quarter US Treasury volatility increased. Government benchmark yields had been range bound. Corporate spreads, whilst experiencing marginal widening, have remained historically tight. We continue to concentrate on the high-quality investment grade names, whilst maintaining a reduced allocation to US Treasuries. Our overall yield from the fixed income component stands at 5.21% and here we are taking on board 3.4 years of duration with an overall credit rating of A-. Relative to the benchmark we are underweight duration and hold a credit rating quality two notches higher. We continue to see good opportunities in the 3-5yr dated credits.

Outlook

Risk assets, despite the barrage of negative headlines from tariffs, macroeconomics, domestic politics, monetary and fiscal policy and geopolitics finished on the quarter on a high note with some indices posting new highs. In our view we simply went past the “Peak” in all volatile cross currents during Q2 of 2025. We hold the view that we are past “peak” tariff concerns, peak inflation, peak geopolitical concerns and now believe the US administration soul focus is in restoring credible economic enhancing policies.

Over the second half of 2025, the US administration will likely focus on arranging tariff deals, alongside the recent budget bill which will be positive from a tax angle, concentrate on deregulation, lower oil prices, productivity enhancing AI initiatives all of which should support economic growth. We see a labour market which remains strong at the headline level, however, forward looking indicators suggesting some moderation. This should provide cover for the Federal Reserve to lower rates later this year, benefitting our portfolio holdings across IG bond names, US Treasuries and our long duration growth stocks.

Whilst we remain optimistic, we are also aware of the tail events which could arise during the second half of the year, and here we are able and willing to put in place protection if needed. Our view of a weakening dollar means we remain unhedged on our non-US -dollar holdings for now. We remain outside the commodity space for now, but should we see a meaningful pull back, we may re-engage. Lastly, despite our overall view we are past “peak” geopolitical uncertainty, we accept these may resurface, in this event from our perspective these periods of volatility have proven to be a good opportunity to add to high conviction themes.
