Executive Summary

Key events in market

Elevated concerns about “higher-for-longer” interest rates were short-lived, as corporate earnings – particularly from mega cap bellwethers Meta, Nvidia and Amazon – were better than anticipated. Against this backdrop, the S&P 500 rose 5.2% while the tech-heavy NASDAQ gained 6.2%.

Key performance & positioning updates

The US Growth Fund rose 7.5% in February, outperforming the Russell 1000 Growth Index by 67 basis points. Monthly performance was driven by positive contributions from Technology, Industrials, Consumer Staples, and Communication Services, while Health Care and Cash detracted from performance.

Market Update

Following hawkish commentary from the Federal Reserve in late January which deferred rate cut expectations to mid-2024, the market appeared poised for a seasonal swoon in February. However, elevated concerns about “higher-for-longer” interest rates proved to be short-lived, as corporate earnings – particularly from mega cap bellwethers Meta, Nvidia and Amazon – were better than anticipated. Against this backdrop, the S&P 500 rose 5.2% while the tech-heavy NASDAQ gained 6.2%.

Most encouraging, February sector performance exhibited greater breadth than in recent months, with Consumer Discretionary, Industrials, Materials, Technology and Communication Services outperforming the broader market. Utilities, Consumer Staples, REITs, Energy, Health Care and Financials underperformed. Large Caps continued their relative outperformance against Small Caps, while Growth again outperformed Value.

Fund Performance & Positioning

Performance & Attribution:
The US Growth Fund rose 7.5% in February, outperforming the Russell 1000 Growth Index by 67 basis points. Monthly performance was driven by positive contributions from Information Technology, Industrials, Consumer Staples, and Communication Services. Health Care and Cash detracted from performance, while Financials, Energy, Consumer Discretionary, and our lack of exposure to Real Estate, Utilities and Materials had a de minimis impact on performance.

The top contributors were:
- Apple Inc.: shares contributed to performance as we were underweight this large index weight that underperformed in the period
- Microsoft Corp.: shares contributed to performance as we did not own this large index weight that underperformed in the period
- UnitedHealth Group Inc.: shares contributed to performance as we did not own this large index weight that underperformed in the period.

The top detractors were:
- Eli Lilly & Co.: shares of this diabetes/weight-loss pharmaceutical leader rallied in the wake of a strong fourth quarter report. This represented a relative detractor to performance, as we do not own this large index weight
- Shopify, Inc.: shares of this commerce platform faltered in the month after the company reported underwhelming guidance
- Medtronic PLC: shares of this medical device leader drifted lower despite an upside quarter and bullish forward guidance.

Sector Positioning:
Exiting February, the Fund’s largest areas of absolute exposure were Technology (39%), Consumer Discretionary (19%), Communication Services (16%), Health Care (10%), Financials (6%), and Industrials (6%). We also maintained moderate positions in Consumer Staples (3%) and Energy (1%). On a relative basis, our largest areas of exposure are Consumer Discretionary and Communication Services, with more moderate overweights in Energy and Industrials. We are underweight Technology, Consumer Staples, Financials, and Health Care. As of month-end the Fund had no exposure to Utilities, Materials, or Real Estate and held approximately 1% in cash.

Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. The value of your investments and the income from them may fall as well as rise as a result of market as well as currency fluctuations and you may not get back the full amount invested. Fund performance is net of fees and representative of the USD I Acc Share Class and shows a maximum of five previous calendar years and current year to date (computed on a NAV to NAV basis). Where share class inception begins prior to the five previous years the chart has been rebased to 100. Where the Fund has fewer than five full years of performance, returns are shown from the inception date. Source: EFG Asset Management, Bloomberg.  As at 29 February 2024.

Outlook

Wall Street’s ability to shrug off restrictive monetary policy and geopolitical angst suggests that investors might refocus their attention on company-specific fundamentals – which remain quite strong – and could also help to take the spotlight off the Federal Reserve and the incessant speculation on various economic landing scenarios.

To wit, while resilient economic indicators continue to stay the hand of the Fed, we remain encouraged by positive business activity updates from our portfolio holdings, including technology-oriented initiatives, stable manufacturing activity, streamlined supply chains, and decisive cost-control actions. Most important, we are inspired by company-specific fundamental results and catalysts and remain optimistic that many of the headwinds endured in 2023 will subside in 2024.

The market rally that transpired in the final quarter of 2023 demonstrated greater breadth than we had seen throughout the year, leading many investors to question whether valuations have become stretched in certain areas of the market considering the moderate growth outlook for 2024. From our perspective, this dislocation – in tandem with a mixed economic backdrop – provides a wealth of opportunities for active managers like ourselves. When growth becomes scarce, we believe our portfolio constituents embody the same characteristics investors should seek to embrace, namely: companies with best-in-class management teams with the vision and capacity to execute against long term plans; brands with differentiated products and services; and market-leading or share-gaining constituents of industries with secular growth opportunities.
